The Beginning of the Journey
Why Does the Christmas Story Start in Genesis?
Many of us jump straight to the birth of Jesus when we think of the Christmas story, but our journey actually begins in the book of Genesis. In Genesis 1 and 2, God creates humanity to be in a close relationship with Him. Adam and Eve enjoyed walking with God in the cool of the morning and evening. However, this perfect communion was disrupted by sin when they disobeyed God’s command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
The First Promise of a Savior
After Adam and Eve sinned, God made a significant promise. He sacrificed an animal to make clothing for them, symbolizing that one day, through bloodshed, their sins would be covered. This act pointed to the future coming of Jesus, the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.
Why Did God’s People Wait So Long for the Messiah?
Throughout the Old Testament, prophecies spoke of a coming Savior who would be born of a woman and the Spirit, through the lineage of David. The people of Israel waited for 4,000 years for this promise to be fulfilled. This long period of waiting can be exhausting and make us question if God will ever come through.
Trusting in God’s Perfect Timing
God’s timing is perfect, even when it doesn’t align with our own. Galatians 4:4 tells us, “But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law.” Just as the Israelites had to wait for the Messiah, we too must trust in God’s perfect timing for our lives.
What Does the Name Immanuel Mean?
In Matthew 1:23, we read, “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.'” This name signifies that Jesus is not just a historical figure but God Himself who came to dwell among us.
The Importance of Names
Names in the Bible often communicate not just what someone does but who they are. Jesus is called the Good Shepherd, the Prince of Peace, and the Great Physician, each name revealing a different aspect of His character and mission.
How Does God Show His Faithfulness?
God is faithful to keep His promises. Numbers 23:19 reminds us, “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” Despite the long wait, God fulfilled His promise by sending Jesus at the perfect time.
What Should We Do While We Wait?
While waiting can be challenging, Psalm 31:24 encourages us to “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.” Trusting in God’s perfect timing requires us to shift our perspective and rely on His faithfulness.
Why Did Jesus Come to Earth?
Jesus came to die for our sins. Matthew 1 and Galatians 4 agree that Jesus’ primary mission was to save us from our sins. His death on the cross paid the debt we could never pay, offering us eternal life and restoring our relationship with God.
How Does Jesus’ Sacrifice Affect Us?
Jesus’ sacrifice means we no longer need to rely on our own efforts to reach God. Hebrews tells us to boldly approach God’s throne because Jesus has removed the barrier that separated us from God. This access to God is a gift we receive through faith in Jesus.
Life Application
How Can We Apply These Truths to Our Lives?
Understanding that God is with us and for us changes everything. Here are a few questions to reflect on this week:

2. How can I remind myself of God’s faithfulness in my daily life?
3. What steps can I take to draw closer to God, knowing that He has already drawn close to me through Jesus?
